Athletic Accomplishments

 

National and Regional:
Sari is currently a junior at John L. Miller Great Neck North High School. Sari possesses a very strong academic record that consists of a very high GPA in extremely demanding programs in one of the most competitive high schools in the country. In fencing, a sport that she pursues year-round, Sari is a nationally ranked junior (under-19) epee fencer (currently ranked 53rd in the US) and she was previously ranked as high as 49th in the country in cadet (under-17). Sari is deeply committed to following a 3-4 hour a day intensive training regimen. This year Sari finished 32nd during the Junior Olympic National Fencing Championships. Last year she earned her B'07 in the Pomme de Terre where she received a Bronze medal. Sari’s other best results include: Silver at the North Atlantic Junior Sectionals, finalist at the Senior North Atlantic Sectionals, 14th place in cadet (Junior Olympics 2007), and 16th place DIV III (Summer Nationals 2006). With only 2 ½ years of fencing experience Sari has successfully competed in numerous regional and national competitions both individual as well as team under head coach Vladimir Gofman. Last year, Sari was elected as Captain of the North Shore Fencer’s Club Junior Women’s Epee Team and was recognized by her club’s coaches as most disciplined.
Interscholastic:
Additionally, to show her school spirit, Sari participates on the school's interscholastic fencing team where she has been recognized as varsity team captain and two-time MVP. In order to complete the interscholastic fencing season, she helped the Great Neck North High School girl's team win the Gold medal in the Nassau County Championships two years in a row. In addition North’s team received the Silver medal during the Long Island Championships during two consecutive seasons pitted against Ward Melville where Sari assisted in coaching the girls' Epee squad. The girl's team received honors as the Dual Match Season Division I Team Champions and the Dual Meet Champions 2008. Individually, Sari was the Gold medalist in the Nassau County Epee Fencing Championships. In addition, Sari earned her black belt in Shotokon Karate at the age of 11. In Great Neck North Middle School she received the 8-Sport Award for her participation in two seasons each of tennis, volleyball, basketball, and softball.
Academic Accomplishments

This year, Sari has earned straight A’s while taking an incredibly demanding course load comprised almost entirely of college-level courses that consist of A.P. American History, A.P. English, A.P. Calculus, A.P. Chemistry, Science Research, Spanish, and Orchestra.
In 2005, she was a recipient of the Board of Education’s Award for contributing to the quality of life at Great Neck North. Sari earned a Scholarship Award for Excellence in Spanish and received a silver medal in the National Spanish Exam. Through her research, Sari has accumulated a number of awards pertaining to the areas of math and science including a Silver medal in the Research Project Seminar, 2006 Freshmen World Cup for testing the validity of the “Mozart Effect”, and an award for academic excellence in earth science. Sari has also earned two silver medals in the Long Island Math Fair: one for the presentation of her research in Cryptology and one regarding her in depth application of the Elliott Wave Principle in her analysis of the role of math in the stock market. In addition, last year Sari placed third in the Rohm & Haas, Invitational Science Fair, and was awarded Meritorious in the Long Island Science Congress for constructing an inexpensive, efficient, and environmentally safe photoelectrochemical dye-sensitized nanocrystalline Gratzel photovoltaic cell. Last year, Sari also had her paper published in Northern Current Great Neck North’s High School science journal, and received a certificate of merit for distinction in science research. Sari also earned a Certificate of Merit for Excellence in Spanish and placed third in the National Spanish Exam. Additionally Sari just recently placed third in Rohm and Haas for learning about system dynamics and, with the use of STELLA computer simulation software, determining the relative effectiveness of various different BMP’s in reducing the harmful effects of eutrophication on a local watershed. Furthermore, Sari was recently accepted into the prestigious and highly competitive Simons Summer Research Fellowship Program held annually at Stonybrook University, where she will be spending her summer conducting INTEL-level biomedical engineering research under the guidance of Dr. Qin and Dr. Lin, and where she will be investigating the diagnostic and healing characteristics of ultrasound, as well as the general application of ultrasound in the measurement of bone properties.

Extracurricular

Sari is vice president of Great Neck North’s athletic leadership club. As a practicing double bassist, Sari is currently the assistant principle of her school's jazz ensemble and symphony orchestra. She is also an officer of her school’s Tri-M Music Honor Society whose chapter was ranked 5th nationwide. In addition, Sari enjoys spending a lot of time helping others such as tutoring her peers in math and science, tending to the needs of the nursing home patients of the Grace Plaza Nursing Home, serving as a volunteer buddy for Special Olympics, and coordinating and distributing food to NYC’s homeless through her temple’s Midnight Run.
