North Shore Fencers Club Background

North Shore Fencers Club opened in the Great Neck facility in 2005 bringing with it a loyal group of students from the previous part-time facility in a Little Neck church hall.  Prior to opening this club Vladimir Gofman had coached in the Fencers Club in Manhattan. Vladimir has dedicated his entire working life more than 40 years to the development of fencers both here and in Russian where he trained the countries Olympians.

The club currently is well recognized in the area as a serious center of training and has in three short years produced many Epee Regional, Sectional Champions and one National Champion.  Our foil students are also gaining recognition in the area and will soon be followed by Sabre.  The dedication of our coaches and students has quickly made this club one to be reckoned with.

North Shore FC is currently working with many after school programs and specialized coaching for competitive Long Island High School Teams including this year’s winners, Garden City HS and our own Coach Retzkin taking the Coach of the Year Award.  In this fencing season 2007-2008 our Epee fencers have taken 1st girl’s and 3rd boy’s in PSAL High School and 1st and 1st in Long Island.  Our Foil and Sabre fencers have ranked in the top 10 for both boy’s and girl’s.

Vladimir has put together a young enthusiastic team of coaches that were specially selected by Vladimir for their proven skills as coaches and their tested and proven fencing records in the international fencing circuit. Their bio’s are also available on this site.

What is the right age to begin fencing for your child?

Although fencing can be taught to beginners of any age, we are often asked this question by parents. For a child who may be interested in competitive fencing, the perfect age to begin lessons is between 6 and 12 years old.
